Champions of the People

This page lists current (with a few outstanding exceptions) United Nations Missions/Officials who truly are the Champions of the People.

These individuals are people who know how to be excellent and loyal representative Government Officials and at the same time, go out of their way to show genuine leadership, compassion and magnanimity for the concerns of all humankind...and especially the NGOs and their efforts at the United Nations.

Princess Diana
1961 - 1997
Queen of Our Hearts

Married to the NGOs and peoples of the world forever!: For the goodness of her heart.

For her great courage to rise above the governments and corporations greed and selfishness in our times.

For the immeasurable loss and contribution she would have given the world.

She will be deeply missed.

Mother Teresa
In New York 14 June 1997
A Saint among us! Waiting for a human to give her Sainthood.

Mother Teresa and Diana are examples of human beings among us who rise to greatness...above Heads of Church or Heads of State to decide if they should give them official recognition.

Neelan Thiruchelvam

No picture as of this time, but there is a 2 hour videotape of his Memorial Service at the United Nations Church Center on August 6, 1999. Contact the Admisiatrator.

Mr. Neelan Thiruchelvam, Sri Lankan legislator and head of the Tamil United Liberation Front, murdered on 29 July 1999. One of the leading advocates of a negotiated settlement to the armed conflict in Sri Lanka.

The world has lost a voice that rang loud and strong in defense of human rights.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson condemned his murder, calling it, " a direct attack on efforts to bring about reconciliation and build a culture of peace and respect for fundamental rights in South Asian country."

Secretary-General, Kofi Annan expressed shock at his assassination and condemned this act of terrorism in the strongest terms.

Compassion and deep sensitivity...

He gave to the causes his own government legally owes and refuses to pay...the Humanitarian Organizations of the UN.

Picture has been withdrawn. Remains to be seen...

Only under his administration has there been a substantial clamp down and restrictions put on the NGOs at the United Nations.

His key staff executive for coordination between the NGOs and the Secretary-Generals office, Assistant Secretary-General for External Affairs, Gillian Sorensen, doesn't even return telephone calls from NGOs after weeks of repeated attempts. All mail sent to SG Kofi Annan is diverted to Gillian Sorensen's office, with no reply.

It is a far cry from SG Boutros Boutros-Ghali and Rosario Green (an NGO) administration of "openness" and "respondsiveness" to the NGOs.

See Ambassador Richard Butler's recent comments on the Charlie Rose's TV show August 10, 1999 about the "38th Floor." at the UN. Better yet, read his new book!

Mr. Kofi Annan
Secretary-General of the United Nations

While he has called for a "People's Assembly", that has been modified from it's original version.
