Help for NGOs

There are NGO's which have "official UN status." And, then there are thousands (maybe millions) of NGO's worldwide.

UN NGO Status comes in three main flavors and then various "other categories":

1. ECOSOC Status (Economic and Social Council - highest status for NGOs at the UN)

2. DPI Status (Department of Information)

3. Press Status (News Media and Press - this is part of DPI)

4. Other Status (Direct relationships with individual UN Organizations)

Global NGO's Listing

Most of the worlds NGOs started by focusing on a community problem with the best of good intentions, looking for a solution to their problem. The few thousand NGOs with UN status see their job as "advocacy" with the worlds governments to solve the worlds problems or accomplish the NGOs specific goals. This is an uphill battle even in the free democratic countries where the NGOs (people organizations) clash with their own governments (who represent someone other than their own people?) In the United Nations this process is called "advocacy" and requires many years of patience, money and sophisticated diplomacy to survive the mine field of UN bureaucracy In many countries of the world this process can be deadly for the NGOs. It is better for the NGO to avoid any frustrations with the "politics of solutions" and stick to trying to solve their problems in the best way they can. Stay out of trouble and be safe, so that you can solve the problem you are focused on.

As of 2000 the funding of NGOs is in massive decline. The governments are giving the money to the rich few at the top and the corporations. The key word is "entitlement." And, no "do-gooder" left wing, socialist (NGO) is entitled to anything, especially money! In this "New World Economic Order" this is a "Market Driven Economy" (The far-right Capitalists have won!) And you all are supposed to get into the Markets and get a job. Of course there are fewer and fewer jobs because they are cutting jobs to move offshore for the cheapest labor. Most people are working two or more jobs to survive. They are driving the wages down without benefits. Labor Unions have been eliminated or weakened. The workers are basically, "Wage Slaves" for the few rich. You might call this period... "The Greatest Global Robber Barons Era." Corrupt corporations, corrupt Wall Street, corrupt financial institutions, corrupt governments which are non-compassionate, extremely conservative, and very far right radical, and on and on...

The corporations and Rich basically are giving through their foundations in what we would call, "Targeted Cosmetic Philanthropy." So to say the least, these are very tuff times for NGOs, workers and the disadvantaged. Secretary-General Kofi Annan was brought into the UN to bring in the corporations, limit the governments, and further restrict the NGOs. We have held UN ECOSOC and UN DPI Status and even sat on the "Executive Committee of NGOs at DPI" Although we continue since 1990 to monitor the United Nations, we are in no way interested in any formal status (control) relationship with the UN at this time. The UN can be very restrictive and very abusive, even to outside non-status NGOs.
