We invite you to join us for the second session of the International Peoples Tribunal on Human Rights and the Environment (IPT). The IPT is reconvening as an urgent response to the Nation States lack of commitment to protect human rights and the environment compounded by the effects of transnational corporations and accelerating globalization.

Victims of unsustainable development practices, its beleaguered Indigenous people, the world's rural and urban poor from Costa Rico, India, Puerto Rico, Mexico, the United States and Canada will bring their cases forward at the Tribunal. Cases pending from Liberia, Nigeria, Burma, Tibet, India, Bolivia, Mexico, Honduras, Guyana, the United States, the Arctic Circle and Canada will conclude. What they claim to have in common are human rights violations and environmental devastation justified in the name of development.

The IPT seeks to provide a forum for peoples from around the world and to mobilize global solidarity in support of their demands for accountability, justice and sustainable development. In diverse parts of the world, many people find themselves bereft of any forum anywhere in which their voices are heard, the wrongs and harms they have suffered recognized, their claims validated and their ongoing struggles for justice legitimated. As a result, in many parts of the world, spontaneous or planned peoples tribunals are being convened. The IPT constitutes one such example of civil societyís response.

The IPT is organized by NGO Human Rights Caucus and the Peace Caucus at the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (UN-CSD) and other interested NGOs

Topic:

The IPT is reconvening as an urgent response to the lack of commitment by governments to protect human rights and the environment when they are adversely affected by transnational corporations and accelerating globalization.

Case presenters will address human rights violations and environmental devastation justified in the name of development which they have experienced.

The IPT seeks to provide a forum for aggrieved peoples from around the world to tell their stories and to mobilize global solidarity in support of their demands for accountability, justice and sustainable development. In diverse parts of the world, many people find themselves bereft of any forum, anywhere, in which their voices are heard, the wrongs and harms they have suffered recognized, their claims validated and their ongoing struggles for justice legitimated. As a result, in many parts of the world, spontaneous or planned peoples tribunals are being convened. The IPT constitutes one such example of civil societyís response.
