Special Memorial for Dr. Neelan Tiruchelvam
The Memorial and celebration of the life and works of Dr. Neelan Tiruchelvam was held at the United Nations Church Chapel in New York City on August 6, 1999. This service was videotaped and copies were taken to Sir Lanka. The tape was shown on national television at prime time (two times) throughout the country of Sir Lanka.Dr. Tiruchelvam was brutally murdered in Colombo, Sri Lanka. A direct violation of the United Nations recently implemented "Declaration of the Protection of Human Rights Defenders"
He was a Lawyer, Government official, and a Major Human Rights Defender for Justice, Peace and Reconciliation. This brave and peaceful man is our world's great loss!
PS: It is almost a crime, that a small group of selfish and narrow minded people at the United Nations have gone out of their way to stop the video taping at the UN (in June 1999) which has been going on for almost six years under the wise and compassionate leadership of the past Secretary-General Boutros Boutros Ghali and Mr. Samir Sanbar, Head of the Department of Public Information.
