51st Annual DPI/NGO Conference

"
THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS: FROM WORDS TO DEEDS"
14 - 16 September 1998 . UN Headquarters, New York

The Conference will focus on the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the impact that it has had on societies around the world. As the title "from words to deeds" implies, the discussions will center around how the Declaration and subsequent human rights treaties have been implemented and are functioning today. Throughout the conference, the theme of the Anniversary, "all human rights for all," which emphasizes the universality, indivisibility, and inter-relationship of all human rights, will be highlighted.

Parallel to the development of international standards, institutions, and mechanisms for the protection of human rights has been the proliferation of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the field of human rights. More than in any other field, these NGOs have played a crucial role in focusing the attention of governments, inter-governmental organizations, and the public on the need to promote human rights.

After beginning with an overview of human rights issues and of the universality of human rights, the conference will launch into a discussion of the impact of globalization on development. Panels will focus on economic and sustainable development issues and trafficking across borders. There will be a panel on the building and strengthening of human rights institutions. Other major themes will be the relationship between human rights and peace and, also, human rights education. Throughout the conference, NGO practitioners and activists working on human rights issues will share their experiences.

The 51st Annual DPI/NGO Conference is organized by the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) in cooperation with the Executive Committee of Non-Governmental Organizations associated with DPI.

Note: The Conference is open to representatives of non-governmental organizations associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information, those in consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, as well as those working with United Nations programmes and specialized agencies, and UN Information Centres and Services. Representatives of other interested non-governmental organizations are welcome, provided that registration is endorsed by the local United Nations Office.
