Preparatory Committee for the Special Session of the General Assembly on the Implementation of the Outcome of the World Summit for Social Development. (May 14-29, 1999)
The meeting accomplish very little and can best be summarized by two statements made during the 2 week long meeting at the United Nations in New York City. (The most intelligent part of the 2-week conference was the Noon time Panels which were presented by both Governments and NGOs. Too bad the attendees did not attend.)
Dr. Clarence Dias (lawyer) on May 18, 1999: When countries sign an international agreement (contract) such as the Copenhagen World Summit for Social Development with the intent (or deliberate following actions) of not delivering on the promises of the contract . . . that, in international legal terms, is FRAUD! (Another comment was, Whether they were putting Teeth into Social Development, or False Teeth?)The Chairman of the Meeting at the conclusion on 4:30 AM Saturday, May 29, 1999: Some of the people (countries represented) here, should be ashamed of themselves!
Ah! Globalization. Stay the course, a thousand points of light! The New World Order (or was that Disorder?) (We need another Bush!) Globalization is here to stay and if you dont get it, well bomb you into understanding. (Read recent (May 1999) NY Times front page article on the bombing of all the factories in Serbia; thereby speeding up the dumping of thousands of workers detailed in the article. We are not trying to kill the people, we bombed at night, just getting them out of the factories faster (got to cut those fixed costs).
The only trouble with all those financial elite's is they have the disease of Saint Finance Dance . . . Everything is a COST therefore, . . . 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3. . . Cut the fixed, cut the fixed, cut the fixed, cut the fixed, cut the fixed, cut the fixed costs!
Seems Globalization and the dumping of millions of jobs world wide, structural adjustment policies without a human face i.e., cutting of social safety nets and destruction of the Entitlement State (The right wing: your not entitled to anything, but we are entitled to everything attitude) and accelerating of the separation of the Rich from the Rest is causing backlashes in many strange ways now. There is nothing Bad about Globalization; it is just Blind to the social mess it is fast creating. (Check out conditions of the Chinese in Indonesia after the financial herd pulled their money out overnight.)
Are we witnessing the beginning of the end of Capitalism as we currently know it? See Robert Ashfords (Kelso) Binary Economics. or Globaloney section here.
Read Jeff Gates, The Ownership Solution or David Kortens new book, The Post Corporate World . . . and stay tuned
PS: Just what is everybody's problem? Let them eat bread? No, Let them buy stocks! Stop picking on the Corporations; they are NOT responsible for the Social conditions of the people. They are only accountable and responsible to their shareholders. (Even though they are ending up with all the power and money in the world. ) Or read the Lexus and the Olive Tree and Tom (Friedman) will tell you all what your real problem is.
